USA Today : Retailers, restaurants offer deals as more of us pinch pennies

Check out this article from USA Today on how coupons have grown on importance during the recesiion and will remail so as the American consumer mindset has undergone changes that will last past the recession.

Three years ago, 48% of consumers bought most products on sale. Today, it's 53%, says NPD Group, a retail market researcher. Last year, nearly seven in 10 consumers shopped in a discount, big-volume or off-price store, compared with five in 10 three years ago, NPD says.

Coupon use at Whole Foods is up 325% over two years, Robb says. And same-store sales were up 2.5% last quarter from a the same quarter last year.

"Everyone looks at the money they spend very differently than they did three years ago," Denny's CEO Nelson Marchioli says. "This generation is forever changed."

"We said then — and we say now — this is not a speed bump in the economy," marketing chief [Starbucks] Terry Davenport says. "It's a fundamental shift in how consumers think about how they spend their money."

Reuters UK : It’s cool now to use restaurant vouchers

Two-for-one restaurant deals and money off vouchers have shrugged off their “uncool” image as the credit crunch bites, according to a survey, and apparently even Wayne Rooney and wife Coleen McLoughlin have used at least one to get a half price evening meal, despite the Manchester United star’s 100,000 pound a week salary.

Dallas Morning News : Restaurants Cozy Up to Coupon Clippers

Restaurant operators are taking a page from the makers of detergent and diapers, offering coupons to bring back consumers who've been cooking at home to conserve cash.

Even veteran restaurant operators who have long derided the profit-eaters concede that in this environment, 75 percent of a sale beats no sale at all.

"The numbers of people coming through the door are down, and people that come in are looking for a bargain," said Jim Elrod, who saw sales at his Fishmonger's Seafood Market & Cafe in Plano plummet in the fall.

Detroit Free Press : Tough times bring enticing deals as restaurants vie for customers

Many expect this to be one of the toughest quarters ever for their industry and predict the recession will close some restaurants.

"There will be some cleansing, like you'll see in other industries," predicts Milford restaurateur Jim Eggl, president of the Michigan Restaurant Association.

Andiamo Restaurant Group owner Joe Vicari says his suppliers are predicting "a lot of restaurant closings" now that the holidays are over.

But if there's a silver lining for anyone, it's for metro Detroit consumers, who can expect to find good dining values this winter as owners compete for their business.

OC Register : 29% of Consumers Using Restaurant Coupons More Frequently

To bolster business, some chains are responding with menu makeovers that focus on special meal deals. Others are offering more coupons.

In a September survey, Technomic found that 29 percent of consumers are using restaurant coupons more frequently now, compared to six months ago.

Chains are leveraging that demand.

"We're definitely going to see heavier promotions, e-marketing, couponing – anything to get the customers in the door," said Paul, whose consulting firm has an office in Newport Beach.
