Marketers—in this case, food marketers—are trying a new approach when it comes to winning followers: Online coupons and incentives that grow in value as more consumers “like” a brand on Facebook.

ConAgra Foods’ Healthy Choice, burger chain Jack in the Box and Barilla’s Wasa Crispbread are recent examples of brands that have been offering these digital incentives. New York Times : Web Coupons Know Lots About You, and They Tell

Coupons from the Internet are the fastest-growing part of the coupon world--their redemption increased 263 percent to about 50 million coupons in 2009, according to the coupon-processing company Inmar. Using coupons to link Internet behavior with in-store shopping lets retailers figure out which ad slogans or online product promotions work best, how long someone waits between searching and shopping, even what offers a shopper will respond to or ignore.

The coupons can, in some cases, be tracked not just to an anonymous shopper but to an identifiable person: a retailer could know that Amy Smith printed a 15 percent-off coupon after searching for appliance discounts at Ebates.com on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and redeemed it later that afternoon at the store.

Who wouldn't pay $10 for a $25 meal, or $25 to enjoy an opulent $50 dinner?

That's the appeal of companies offering online coupons good for discounts at restaurants locally and nationwide. Analysts say the niche actually expanded amid the sagging economy, as a restaurant outing is a relatively affordable indulgence compared with, say, a new sports car.

And if you have a coupon to defray the cost of a meal, so much the better.

The Winston-Salem NC company credits the uptick in coupon redemption to the economy, yet gains in online coupon redemption has out-clipped newspapers 17-to-1, according to Coupons.com.

"When everyone started hearing reports of record unemployment, drops in consumer confidence and losses on Wall Street, coupon redemption volume started to go up," said Bob Carter, president of Inmar CMS Promotion Services.
