Multichannel Merchant : Facebook and Google Getting In On Daily Deals

Speaking earlier this month at the Daily Deal Summit in New York, Yipit co-founder/CEO Vinicius Vacanti said both Facebook and Google have shown signs that they want to enter the rapidly-growing flash sales space.

Facebook has shown it can be a social aggregator, which is Yipit's role in the Daily Deal industry. That means Facebook is collecting deals from business partners including Gilt City and HomeRun.com and relying on Facebook users to share their enthusiasm and experience with their friends.

Mashable : Google to Lanuch Groupon Competitor, "Google Offers"

Google is preparing to launch Google Offers, the search giant’s Groupon competitor, Mashable has learned. We have the documents to prove it.

One of our sources has sent us a confidential fact sheet straight from the Googleplex about the company’s new group buying service. “Google Offers is a new product to help potential customers and clientele find great deals in their area through a daily email,” the fact sheet says.

Reuters : Groupon Inc is considering selling itself to Google

Reuters reports:

E-commerce coupon site Groupon Inc is considering selling itself to Google Inc., according to media reports on Friday.

The two are in discussions about an acquisition for more than $3 billion, reported the technology blog AllThingsD, citing anonymous sources, on Friday.

However, according to the article, Google declined to comment:

A Google spokesman said the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.

And Groupon has no publicly announced intentions to sell, according to the same Reuters article:

"There is nothing for us to comment on. These are just rumors," said Groupon spokeswoman Julie Mossler.

Google Poised to Make Major Play in Mobile Coupon Business with Google Offers

A recent Mobile Marketer article quotes Google executive Mike Steib talikng about the location based coupon business it plans to build, Google Offers:

Mobile-coupon spending is projected to reach $1 billion by 2011, per Google.

Mr. Steib said that mobile coupons drive business. To take mobile couponing to the next level, various players must agree on a technology that makes the redemption process work better, whether it is 2D bar codes or near field communication and RFID.
